Supplemental Security Income

Experienced Philadelphia SSI Lawyers

Social Security Disability benefits are available to provide income for people in the workforce who become disabled or develop long-term illnesses that will affect their ability to remain employed. However, some people with significant financial need are unable to qualify for SSDI benefits for whatever reason. For these injured and disabled people, Supplemental Security Income may provide the financial resources they need.

At the Disability Benefits Law Center, we provide experienced and effective legal help to people seeking Supplemental Security Income benefits. Our attorneys can help you at any stage of the process-from the initial application to an appeal in federal court.

The requirements for Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Income is managed by the Social Security Administration (SSA), though the benefits are paid from a different fund than Social Security Disability benefits. Much like Social Security Disability benefits, though, a person applying for Supplemental Security Income must meet certain financial and disability criteria to qualify.

Disability—To be eligible for Supplemental Security Income benefits, you must prove you have one of the enumerated physical, mental or emotional disabilities also used in determinations for SSD benefits. Your condition must be severe enough to leave you unable to work for at least 12 months or it will eventually cause your death. Disabled children under 18 may also qualify for SSI benefits, but they must prove a higher level of disability than adults.

Financial—To be eligible for SSI benefits, you must have limited income and less than $2,000.00 in cash or cash equivalent resources. The Social Security Administration may not just consider your personal income, but may look to other household income (like alimony, child support payments or your spouse's resources) to determine financial eligibility.

To be eligible for these benefits, you must submit an application and establish that you have met the qualifications. Our attorneys assist people at all stages of the process. We have helped thousands of individuals obtain disability benefits, and we are ready to help you. Contact our offices to schedule a free consultation today.
