Apply as soon as you can
You should apply for disability benefits as soon as you become disabled. Applications for these benefits can be made several ways: 1) through our law firm by calling 215-886-0660 or toll-free at 1-866-886-0660; 2) in person at your local Social Security office; 3) by calling Social Security's toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213 (answered from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.); or 4) via Social Security’s Internet site, www.socialsecurity.gov.
Financial and disability requirements must be met
Financial – In order to be eligible to obtain SSD benefits, you must have paid enough into the Social Security system and have worked recently enough. For example, if you stopped working many years ago but only recently became disabled, you may not be “insured” and may not be financially eligible. To be eligible for SSI benefits, you must meet low income and asset requirements.
Disability – To be considered disabled, you must have one or more medical impairments that have lasted, or are expected to last, at least 12 months or result in death. Further, you must show that the symptoms of your disability prevent you from performing any of the work you have done in the last 15 years. Lastly, depending on your age, you may also have to prove that you are unable to perform easier types of work.
