TED WALKENHORST: There's two types of disability programs. The Social Security Disability Insurance benefit covers individuals who have a work history and have a recent work history. SSI has a companion disability program for individuals who have not worked, not worked recently enough and have low income and low assets.
DAVID R. MACHEK: Unfortunately, the process is often long and tedious. By the time a person is getting their hearing date, they've already been out of work for probably a minimum of 12 months. That's why we prefer working with clients earlier to hopefully avoid that delay.
The main thing a person has to have is a medically determinable impairment, which could be depression, anxiety, heart problems, back problems. And this condition, either by itself or in combination with another condition, basically has to render that person unable to perform the past work they did or other types of work on a full time basis.
TED WALKENHORST: We don't charge anything for advice or consultation. Social Security regulates our fees. We're more than happy to give people good advice, advice that in many cases can make a difference between a winning claim and an unsuccessful claim. That's why we come to work every day to help individuals qualify for disability benefits.
